Karen L. Vause M.D.

I have been a psychiatrist for over 25 years. During those years, I have treated individuals ranging from adolescents to mature adults. I have worked with individuals from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The human mind is fascinating and it is a privilege to be able to attempt to reduce human pain and improve other’s quality of life. Treatment is a collaborative process in the service of improving your mental health and well-being. My goal is to try to help you achieve your goals.

Karen L. Vause M.D. treats psychiatric illnesses such as: Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Anxiety Disorders. PTSD, Eating Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Behavioral Problems, Life stresses and Losses, Infertility, Adoption,  Women’ Health issues, and Family Problems. See Patient Services

I am also available to other licensed mental health professionals for medication consultation and supervision. I will perform Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations for attorneys.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Adolescent Psychiatry. I am also certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. I served as Associate Medical Director of an adolescent chemical dependency and behavioral disorders inpatient program, where I supervised fully boarded psychiatrists and psychiatrists in training for many years. I have worked 20 years as a psychiatric medication consultant to health care facilities. I have served a chairperson and committee member on various committees in local hospitals. These experiences broadened my vision of relevant mental health issues and helped my conceptualization of treatment strategies.

I have broad based experience which allows me to treat a wide variety of individual with different ages, backgrounds, issues, diagnoses and needs. For example: I have delivered mental health care in outpatient, inpatient; sub-acute, extended care, and long term care  facilities, assisted living , residential facilities, and mental health clinics. I have delivered mental health care in the private, university, VA, HMO and public health system. In addition, I have a Master’s in Public Health and worked as a health planning analyst. My experience of treating thousands of patients of all ages and walks of life and their mental health needs is incorporated in my current work with individual patients and their families. I am enriched by treating people of different ethnic backgrounds and different walks of life. These opportunities add a new perspective, new challenges, growth and new satisfactions.

Teaching Experience

UCLA School of Medicine, was co-moderator for process groups held for post-doctoral physicians in psychiatry training helping them with issues associated with their training and their life (for 10 years).

Supervised post-doctoral physicians training as psychiatrists, the supervision was how to diagnose and treat their patients in one-to-one therapy.

Chemical Dependency Teaching Program for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows at UCLA. These were psychiatrists who were training as child and adolescent specialists.
